讲座简介:
The progress of the demographic transition in Asia has been rapid and accompanied by massive population redistribution within countries. An estimated 280 million Asians currently reside outside their region of birth, compared to 78 million residing outside their country of birth. Despite its significance, relatively little is known about how internal migration varies across the continent. In this seminar, we discuss the myriad of challenges in undertaking comparative studies of internal migration and how these can be addressed within the IMAGE project framework. We then examine three discrete dimensions of internal migration: intensity, age and impact, across a sample of 29 Asian countries. Results point to considerable diversity in the intensity and spatial impact of migration flows, reflecting the diverse economic, social and political contexts in which migration is occurring. At the same time, regularities in migration age profiles suggest commonalities with respect to the role of migration in the life course across the countries of Asia. Systematic explanation of these similarities and differences awaits further research. We therefore conclude by setting forth our agenda for further work on internal migration across the countries of Asia.
